Afghan Captain Gets Pair of Indian Keralite Hands in Rare Transplant

Indian doctors proved to be efficacious performing a rare medical surgery to a Afghan soldier and captain. Science is springing up bearing witness that nothing is impossible in the medical stream. Abdul Rahim working as the captain in Afghanistan’s Border Security Force aged 30 year old created history becoming the second person to receive a successful double hand transplant in India.  . Abdul Rahim captain in Afghanistan’s Border Security Force lost his two hands three years ago while defusing a mine on the Afghanistan border.

Last month more than 20 surgeons at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences performed a 15-hour long surgery to transplant two hands to Abdul Rahim. Hands transplanting surgery performed on Abdul Rahim was a complicated involving connecting two bones, two arteries, four veins and about 14 tendons in two hands while the donor of the both the hands was 54 years old  Mr. T. T. Joseph from Eloor Kochi who was declared brain dead after being met with an accident.

Afghan Soldier Becomes The Second Person To Receive Double Hand Transplant In India

Abdul Rahim was optimistic since the beginning of the surgery  and is responding positively to the treatment. He would be discharged successfully is the progress continues further. Abdul Rahim is the second person in the history to undergo hands transplantation while the first man to be positively to the treatment who went through the same procedure in January.
